Sus-Attainable: Unpacking Community Based conservation
Abstract
Under the question of how to ensure the conservation of the Amazon Rainforest while taking into account the multiple expectations and economic needs of the local communities, this podcast analyzes the case of the Amarakaeri Communal Reserve, it was recognized by the IUCN 2008 Green List certification for their successful model of co-management. From the experience of this conservation area, we reflect on the opportunities and challenges that arise when applying social innovation methodologies such as conservation by local communities and co-management of protected areas in the local space. This case also introduces us to the limits faced by the application of policies linked to the achievement of the SDG 16 in its search to create peace and dialogue through the inclusion and empowerment of vulnerable populations. Is that an easy task? To help us answer all these questions, we will have the comments of Juan Pablo Sarmiento, a researcher for the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and part of its Global Comparative Study of REDD+.
